Forget Shadows, Colorado's Groundhog Sees Powder

(ECHO MOUNTAIN PARK, Colo. - February 2, 2007) - In an unprecedented display of ski bum mentality, skiers and riders cheered as Yung Punx, the great grandhog of Punxsutawney Phil, forgot about his shadow, grabbed his snowboard, and rode the fresh powder Colorado has been receiving all week.

"It's one thing for Yung Punx to see his shadow and run back into his hole, after all he's been doing it for years, but it's unprecedented for the groundhog to pick up his board and start jibbing," said Nick Bohnenkamp, Colorado Ski Country USA communications coordinator. "All this powder must have gone to his head.  Perhaps Punx is trying to tell us he plans to trade the shadows for the Colorado slopes permanently.  From the looks of our snow, he'll be enjoying it until June."

The seventh winter storm in as many weeks slammed into Colorado on Wednesday morning leaving up to two feet of powder in its wake.  With just a 24-hour break between storms, the eighth winter storm moved across the state on Thursday dropping even more light powder.  Colorado's three-day accumulation totals this week reach depths of up to 27 inches with all 26 resorts in the state reporting freshly fallen snow.

It is the anticipated sunshine that will take top billing this weekend at Colorado's resorts.  The snow clouds have already rolled eastward, leaving behind plenty of sunshine, blue skies, and smooth weekend traveling for Colorado skiers and riders.

"With tons of new snow and plenty of sunshine on tap, this weekend looks to be one that we ski bums dream about," stated Punx.
