Colorado Ski Country USA Aligns with National Ski Areas
Association for National Skier Safety Awareness Week
Skier Safety Awareness Week January 19-25
DENVER, Colo. - January 7, 2008 - Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA)
and their 26 member resorts have partnered with the National Ski
Areas Association (NSAA) to inform skiers and snowboarders about
Skier Safety Awareness Week happening January 19-25. Skier
Safety Awareness week is a series of programs designed to cultivate
safe practices on the slopes through incentives and
education.
Central to the idea of ski and snowboard safety are the seven
principles listed in the "Your Responsibility Code," a nationally
recognized code of on-mountain etiquette designed to keep skiers
and riders safe while enjoying winter sports.
The responsibilities within the code include:
• Always stay in control, and be able to stop or
avoid other people or objects.
• People ahead of you have the right of way. It
is your responsibility to avoid them.
• You must not stop where you obstruct a trail,
or are not visible from above.
• Whenever starting downhill or merging into a
trail, look uphill and yield to others.
• Always use devices to help prevent runaway
equipment.
• Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off
closed trails and out of closed areas.
• Prior to using any lift, you must have the
knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
CSCUSA works closely with our resorts to put together programs and
activities utilizing Your Responsibility Code to foster safer ski
and snowboard practices. Below are some of the programs being
offered during Skier Safety Awareness Week to encourage safety on
the slopes.
Aspen/Snowmass
Aspen Highlands will host Avalanche Dog Demos. This crack
team of K9's will show guests how expert dogs find avalanche
victims. For those interested in backcountry and hike-to
terrain, Aspen Mountain will have Beacon Basin demos.
Buttermilk will host a Kids Safety Day that includes a safety
poster contest for local kids and educational activities.
More kids' activities will be at Snowmass. They will host a
Safety Carnival with demonstrations and games for kids. Also,
Aspen/Snowmass is launching a Safety Video Contest where kids and
teens are encouraged to make their own safety videos and submit
them at the end of the season. New this year, there will be a
Q&A at the top of the parks at Snowmass and Buttermilk on
terrain park safety. Kids will come up and answer the
questions, and if they answer correctly, they win an Aspen/Snowmass
bandana.
Powderhorn
Powderhorn will participate in the NSAA poster contest for kids, a
local contest that invites elementary-aged children in resort
communities to design safety-related posters. The resort will
also dedicate an entire run as a Slow Skiing Zone Run for safety
and family skiing. In addition, Powderhorn is producing a
safety video during Safety Week centered on the Skier's
Responsibility Code and featuring the new 'Mogul the Moose'
mascot.
Steamboat
Steamboat participates in the NSAA National Safety Awareness Week
with their Lids On Kids Program and Head's Up Safety
Initiative. In addition, to promote this industry-wide safety
initiative, Steamboat has developed creative safety programs unique
to its operations that will be implemented during Safety Week.
These safety demonstrations include, on-mountain contests, Boeri
helmet promotions, redeemable coupons for guests who can recite
parts of Your Responsibility Code, ski school safety presentations,
employee competitions, and participation in the Kids' Safety Poster
Contest.
Vail
Safety Week at Vail will include a calendar of activities specially
designed to raise guest awareness about various personal measures
that can help protect everyone on the mountain. Activities at
Vail will emphasize the seven points of Your Responsibility Code
and skiers and riders are invited to participate in the many on and
off-mountain events, including slope sweeps with the Vail Ski
Patrol, clinics with the Vail Ski and Snowboard School, a "Taking
Care of Your Body" clinic with Howard Head Sports Medicine, Flight
for Life Helicopter Landing, a morning trivia game hosted by TV 8,
and ski safety booths featuring the Yellow Jacket Program.
