DENVER, Colo. - Jan. 7, 2008 - Colorado's 26 member ski resorts
saw a near perfect December as fresh snow fell 30 of 31 days in ski
country. Aspen/Snowmass and Telluride experienced their snowiest
Decembers in resort history, with near record snowfall totals
reported at many other Colorado resorts.
Aspen/Snowmass set their new all-time record for the most snowfall
in the month of December with 118 inches, nearly tripling their
monthly average, and beating their 1983-84 record by one inch.
Telluride received over 90 inches last month, making it the
snowiest December in the resort's history. Purgatory at Durango
Mountain Resort reached its second highest December snowfall total
with 99 inches, and Steamboat experienced its third snowiest
December on record after receiving 126 inches and seeing snow 26
out of 31 days.
Other impressive December snowfall totals include Wolf Creek's 14
foot-thick snowy blanket (173 inches to be precise), Monarch
Mountain's 141 inches of fresh powder and Silverton's 137 inches of
snow. Powderhorn received 128 inches of snow during the month, more
than tripling their December snow total from last season.
During the entire month, fresh snow fell hard, and consistently. On
December 1, Silverton Mountain received 48 inches of new snow in
one 18-hour period, marking the second largest 24 hour snow total
in their history. On December 31, Steamboat was in an active storm
cycle that yielded 20 inches of new snow in 48-hours. In the
meantime, Wolf Creek was blanketed by 99 inches of snow in one
seven-day period, Crested Butte by 70 inches in another, and
Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort by four feet in a single week.
Aspen/Snowmass received more than five feet of snow from two
storms, and Monarch opened to skiing and riding with 65 inches in
48 hours.
Front Range resorts also received above average snowfall totals
during December. Vail reached the century mark, totaling 100 inches
for the month which is more than 40 inches above average. Beaver
Creek received 92 inches of fresh snow, Breckenridge 75 inches, and
Copper Mountain 72 inches of snow respectively.
With this past weekend's storm dropping over four feet of fresh
snow in some areas, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy the 21 feet
of snow that has fallen in ski country season-to-date and revel in
the fact that not only is it still snowing, but there is more
forecasted for this week.
